Series IX, Miscellany, has rosters of officers in Metcalf's submarine commands, certificates, news clippings, invitations, pamphlets, programs, brochures and pamphlets on the Manitowoc submarines, a variety of submarine items, including histories, handouts, booklets, ceremonies, newsletters, ship's newspapers, diagrams, articles, patrol reports, visits, and Series VIII houses four Captain's Night Order Books, dating from 1943 to 1949. Series VII, Subject Files, contains information on Captain William Germershausen, a submariner during World War II, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space Corporation, and the Lockheed Polaris program in the United Kingdom, 1953-2001. Series VI, Writings, contains a memoir of Home Rutledge, who served in the Navy in the 1930s and World War II, VADM Charles Lockwood's typescript of Down to the Sea in Subs, a book review, biographical sketch, and a piece on SS-266 versus I-183. Series V, Speeches, has outlines of speeches, note cards, and talks on submarines and at Memorial Day events. Joe Courtney, of Connecticut’s 2nd Congressional District, visited the Naval Submarine Base New London waterfront and Naval Submarine School after touring nearby General Dynamics. Series IV, Correspondence, contains official correspondence, both letters sent and received, private correspondence, retirement letters, correspondence regarding Submarine Command, Pacific, his household effects and moves, command of the USS Loggerhead and USS Greenfish, the University of Wisconsin ROTC assignment, command of Submarine Division 12, and the Joint Intelligence Group, as well as personal/official letters, 1941-2004. Mike Gilday departs from the Virginia Class submarine USS South Dakota (SSN 790), after a tour of the submarine. Series III, Naval Papers, contains memoranda regarding reimbursements and recommendations, 1936-1946, and fitness reports, 1945, 1950, and 1951. Series II, Naval Orders, has copies of his assignments from 1935 to 1957. Series I, Biographical Information, contains Metcalf's resume, an entry in Who's Who in the West, and excerpts from the Navy record, along with his obituary. Nuclear operators are considered the Navy’s best and brightest, with only the top-scoring applicants gaining acceptance into the prestigious training program. The collection consists of twelve boxes of correspondence, naval orders and papers, speeches, writings, subject files, night order books, and miscellany covering the years 1930-2008.
