Professor alison downie8/24/2023 ![]() Robin was also conscious of the debt he owed to those who had taught him at the University, particularly William Maclagan and Bill Lamont. Among his very last publications were pieces in the Scottish Review about Smith and one of Glasgow’s other major philosophers, Thomas Reid. ![]() He edited a selection of the works of Francis Hutcheson and published shorter pieces on Adam Smith. Robin was always conscious that he was heir to a long and distinguished tradition of philosophy in Glasgow. His background in music and literature made him particularly well qualified for this. Robin also joined with Sir Kenneth in pioneering the field of medical humanities. Their joint publications included books on the ethics of health care and, most recently, a book on the quality of life, subtitled ‘a post-pandemic philosophy of medicine’. Another of his co-authors was Sir Kenneth Calman. During his final illness he was pleased to find that the consultant treating him was familiar with his work in this field. Among his co-authors was Fiona Randall with whom Robin wrote three books relating to issues in palliative care. Many of these were written in conjunction with medical colleagues. He published a very large number of books and articles on topics related to medicine. He established modules on values for the BN. Robin chaired a government committee which examined the teaching of values in social work courses. These included education, social work, and, particularly, medicine and allied professions. In most of his later work Robin sought to apply philosophical thinking to issues encountered in everyday life and to the work of various professions. These ideas underpinned much of his teaching in philosophy classes. He acknowledged that it might not apply so readily to other traditions but pointed to examples such as the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights which suggest that it could be more widely shared. He argued that this can be seen as underpinning the liberal-democratic tradition in moral and political thought. ![]() In these works he developed a view of ethics based on the Kantian notion of respect for persons. This was the underlying theme of much of his teaching and of his first three books, Government Action and Morality, Respect for Persons (co-authored with his Glasgow colleague Elizabeth Telfer) and Roles and Values. Central to virtually all of Robin’s philosophical activity was the conviction that Moral Philosophy has a direct relevance to everyday life. He retired from the Chair in 2002 but continued to publish works of philosophy to the very end of his life. During that time he worked to increase the Department’s staffing and range of courses. He served as head of the Moral Philosophy Department until it was amalgamated with the Logic Department to form a single department of Philosophy. Ten years later he was appointed to the Moral Philosophy chair. Robin was appointed to a lectureship in Moral Philosophy in 1959. Together they had three daughters of whom Robin was immensely proud : Alison, Catherine and Barbara. In 1958 he married Eileen Flynn whom he had met during his undergraduate years in Glasgow. After demobilisation he moved to Oxford where he took the B. He was assigned to the Intelligence Corps, which meant taking intensive training in Russian language. He then spent two years in the army as a national serviceman. He took honours in Philosophy and English and graduated with a first class degree. Initially he thought of studying Music but a chance encounter with an introductory book on Philosophy led him to change his mind. He attended the High School of Glasgow and then came to the University. Robin was born in Stepps, Lanarkshire, but his family moved to Glasgow when he was still very young. Types of wire strippers8/24/2023 Therefore, if you apply too much pressure on the handle, you’ll simply clip the end of the wire off. Unlike the first tool, the cutting jaws on this plier don’t have graded blades for wire diameters. ![]() Finally, pull the wire back and remove the casing. Next close the jaws so the blades engage the plastic casing. To use it, insert the wire to be stripped into the cutting jaws. This type of wire cutter comes in assorted sizes and is useful for cutting and stripping electrical wire of most any diameter. This is more or less a universal wire stripper, and it can be used to cut wire and smaller-diameter cable as well. Wire cutter and stripperįor smaller wires, I use a combination cutter and stripping tool, as shown in fig. However, when making feeder wires for N scale track, I often use 24 gauge wire, and when wiring DCC decoders, I usually use 26 or 28 gauge, all of which are too small for this tool. This type of wire stripper is pretty foolproof, and most of the wire I use on O and HO model railroads fall in the 16 to 22 gauge category. This type of wire stripper makes it easy to remove the insulation every single time, and it works well with both solid (shown) and stranded wire. ![]() Then pull the wire back out with the jaws still closed. To use them, insert the wire (20 AWG, in this case) into the correct blade and close the jaws. The wire crimper and stripper tool has a series of blades graded to fit particular wire diameters. 5, you should be left with clean, exposed wire on the tip and an empty bit of casing. With the jaws closed, pull the wire out of the stripper. To strip a piece of wire, select the matching gauge marked on the tool, insert the wire, and close the jaws, as shown in fig. Remember, when using the American Wire Gauge (AWG) scale, the larger the number, the smaller the diameter of the wire. The wire stripper on this tool is graded by the wire diameter for the common sizes of 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 22 gauge wire. My pair of crimping pliers also include a bolt cutter for small-gauge bolts, and then finally the wire stripper. Check to make sure the wire is held firmly by the metal clasp inside the sleeve. Next, set the center of the sleeve into the jaw of the crimper matching the corresponding color, then close the jaws tightly. ![]() To use one, simply insert the exposed end of the wire into the connector’s sleeve. They are used for low-voltage applications only. These assorted electrical connectors can be applied to the exposed end of solid and stranded wire using the appropriate jaw on the crimping tool. (Note: Do not use these for household wiring.) You can find crimp connectors in the electrical aisle of most well-stocked hardware stores and home centers, and they provide an easy way to make low-voltage electrical connections without requiring soldering. 3, the connectors themselves come in various shapes and sizes and commonly include exposed metal ends that form lugs, loops, and male or female sockets. Its stripper is graded for removing the plastic casing from 10-22 gauge wire.Īs seen in fig. The color corresponds to the wire-diameter size accepted by the crimp-on connector and is usually indicated by the plastic insulation sleeve on the end it, or for those without insulation, as indicated on the package.) See how we use a Xuron Universal Wire Stripper in this video.īesides cutting and stripping wire, this tool also can be used to cut small bolts and apply crimp-on wire connectors. After that there are three color-coded jaws for crimping electrical connectors. ![]() The larger of the two is a combination crimper and wire stripper, as shown in fig. Two common types of wire strippers include the crimper and stripper on the left and the cutter and stripper on the right. Each works a bit differently and both have some additional uses. While there are other wire-stripping tools available, these represent the two most common types. 1, and both have served me well over the years. I use the two examples of wire strippers shown in fig. Tools to cut and strip wire when building a model railroad: When wiring a model railroad, an essential tool is a good pair of wire strippers.

The talos principle 28/24/2023 ![]() I'm fascinated by The Talos Principle's lack of visual artistic direction. It's cleverly written stuff, varied and interesting. Its meat is in logs, excerpts, e-mails and interactive conversations that you extract from DOS prompts, records that touch on everything from the day-to-day running of a scientific facility to literature and, particularly, philosophy. There is a surprisingly intricate story being told, here, and its substance is only gestured at by that booming voice in the heavens. Considerations about the meaning of personhood, apocalypse, machine intelligence and the ramifications of the Biblical Fall of man are spun through the game via text-dispensing terminals. The other half of The Talos Principle is found in its loftier ideas. Framerate is uncapped and I achieved around 90fps on average with everything turned up to max. You can switch to a third person view, alter the aspect ration, and even alter the colour balance and contrast of the game through a series of filters. The Talos Principle gives you an impressive amount of control over how the game looks and feels. Graphics options Field of view (60-120), graphics API, V-sync, triple buffering, CPU speed, GPU speed, GPU memory, colour options, letterboxing aspect ratio, HUD scale. The DLC is good too, but hard.Reviewed on Intel Core i5 2500K, 16GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 If you haven't got Talos Principal, I highly recommend buying it, since it's probably super-cheap now. Some of the hardest hidden puzzles absolutely need a walkthrough or a communal Discord/forum problem-solving effort. The puzzle rooms are supposed to be isolated from each other, but you can set up things in one puzzle so they can be seen from another, or "smuggle" an item outside the location it's supposed to exist in. Then there's another layer of meta-puzzles, which aren't explicitly given and are literally outside-the-box thinking. I found one with cryptic hints that really helped me feel like I was still solving the problem by myself, but with a bit of guidance. I got most of them, but needed some walkthroughs. So you can complete the game but you won't have the "best" ending.Įach puzzle had a bonus star objective, and getting those was much harder. If it's like the last game, getting a working solution is not that hard for most of the puzzles. View: Ĭlick to shrink. It should be similar to Portal 2 in that you probably won't get all the puzzles and might need a guide for some levels, but you should be able to solve most of them without help. The Melodies of CreationImmerse yourself in the rich, bittersweet world of The Talos Principle with a stunning soundtrack by master composer Damjan Mravunac (Serious Sam, The Talos Principle), with a guest appearance by Chris Christodoulou (Risk of Rain 1 and 2). ![]() Take a break from puzzle-solving to discover long-buried secrets and strands of forgotten history. Brave New WorldExplore more than a dozen all-new environments, from a city on the brink of a paradigm shift to the varied landscapes of a mysterious island that holds the keys to the future. A Philosophical OdysseyTake the next step forward in the story of The Talos Principle in a thought-provoking, character-driven interactive story with multiple endings penned by returning writers Jonas Kyratzes (The Eternal Cylinder, Clash: Artifacts of Chaos) and Tom Jubert (The Swapper, Subnautica), joined by Verena Kyratzes (The Hand of Merlin, Serious Sam 4). A variety of new abilities, such as gravity manipulation and mind transference, join the established mechanics of the original Talos Principle, creating a fresh but familiar experience. Finish the game without solving every puzzle, or pursue the rewards of complete mastery. A New Generation of PuzzlesSolve a wide array of puzzles with varying difficulty levels, including clever metapuzzles and highly challenging Gold puzzles. The broken promise of a better tomorrow, the fear of repeating humankind's mistakes, faith in reason or renouncing humanity altogether - the choices you make and the sides you take will determine the course of events. The more you discover, the more you will be confronted with questions about the nature of the cosmos and the purpose of civilization. I think these are the first details we've got on the new gravity manipulation and mind transference tools for puzzles:īorn into a new world where biological humanity is extinct but human culture lives on in a city of robots, you find yourself swept up in a mind-bending adventure involving a mysterious megastructure hiding enormous powers. This new world looks insane with so much going on. The first game is one of my favourite games ever.

DaVinci Resolve was created as a platform that was exclusively for advanced color correction. There used to be a time when DaVinci Resolve and Premiere Pro were considered two fundamentally different programs.

A dragon keeper characters8/24/2023 ![]() ![]() You barely get in to the full flow of any book in 100 pages. It's a wonderful tale of twists and turns with incredible character development throughout.Īnyway, 100 pages is nothing. I must be honest and say that after reading TM I originally was tempted to skip RWC (I think I listened to some of the less favourable reviews), but I stuck to it and read on. RWC gets a very hard time quite often on this sub and it saddens me that that is so. There's a fantastic treat right at the end of the series too, one that I am sure will have any reader chomping at the bit. One of the character's stories is so heartwarming and beautifully written, and if you give up now you'll not experience that. Robin has such strength when it comes to writing and developing characters, and in RWC that is in no way missing. Not the same plot, mind you, just a life changing quest. It's Fitz' fantastic journey to find Verity stretched out over four books. I don't want to give anything away, but I think of the series as an extended Assassin's Quest. I guess it does have a slow and hard luck beginning, but it does get so much better. It was the one I was looking forward to the most when I did a reread of the whole RotE last year. I think RWC is my favourite of the RotE books. The banner is an artwork by the great John Howe. The beautiful background depicting Buckkeep was done by PapayouFR on Deviantart. GRASS is written primarily in C/C++, although many of its modules are written in Python or other languages. GRASS is definitely the winner when it comes to data analysis and geoprocessing, and its tools can be used from external applications, making it an extremely extensible tool which is worth learning even if you don't take it on as your primary desktop GIS system. The second reason I like the interface is that it exposes the wide and powerful array of data manipulation tools directly. ![]() One, since it really is just a GUI abstraction to the underlying Python commands, advanced users can easily manipulate data and display directly from the Python console, for speed, preciseness, and importantly for academic applications, easy replicability. While the interface may not feel as intuitive to newcomers as some other GIS applications, I like it for two reasons. If the GUI feels like it was later tacked on to a powerful program working under the hood, well, that's probably what actually happened. I mention this history because it will help you to understand the interface, which launches with a terminal window and asks you a few questions about setting up your project before launching a separate control and display window for working with your data. In the time since, GRASS has been adopted by the academic community, where its development continues today. It has a very long history, dating back to original development which began in 1982 under the US government. GRASS, which stands for Geographic Resources Analysis Support System). Let's take a look at some of the options. While their flagship product is closed source, I would be remiss not to note that Esri has made numerous contributions to the open source community.įortunately, GIS users have a few choices for using open source tools to design maps and work with spatial data that can be obtained under free and open source licenses and which run on a variety of different non-Windows operating systems. Linux and Mac users are out of luck unless they want to run ArcGIS in a virtualized environment, and even then, they're still using a closed source product that can be very expensive to license. ArcGIS is an incredibly powerful tool, but unfortunately, it's a proprietary product that is designed for Windows. ![]() If you've ever worked with geographic data on the desktop, chances are that you used Esri's ArcGIS application in at least part of your work.
